Two Years After Delhi Gang Rape: How Safe Do Women Feel in India?

What is unbelievable is that it is not just young girls who are victims to such harassment. Physical harassment is common for women in the age group of 40-55 years. Some of the women who took part in the survey say that, “We have become so used to getting stared at or hearing comments that we often simply ignore or shout back at the most. Police are there to target couples who are spending time together in public places. But they do nothing to catch potential criminals who often wander around freely on Delhi roads. Just go to Connaught Place to see the number of drug addicts and beggars,” she added.

It is shocking to imagine what the country is heading towards. There are some who give up on their dream jobs and higher studies in Delhi, as their parents don’t feel safe to let them live in the capital city for that long. That is not a solution but this is the only precaution one can take to save their kids from having to go through any mishap.

Deepak Mishra, Delhi’s Special Police Commissioner says that there are enough laws to curb such incidents. However women in Delhi strongly opine that there is a need for stricter and stringent laws against perpetrators. Some others opine that our men lack the very basic ethics.
