Trump Plans to Scrap NASA's Earth Science Program

Some scientists made their views very clear by saying that without NASA Earth science, it would be practically impossible to work. Huge swaths of planet would go virtually unmeasured as a result of this step. The areas of research which are going to suffer as a result of this scrapping includes global rainfall, rising sea level, Arctic sea ice and health of the oceans. This would create a huge void in our learning process.

But Walker believes that other agencies will be able to pick up from where NASA leaves and it’s not going to affect that much.

One of the problems with the scrapping of Earth science program is that there isn't another agency within the federal government built for NASA's task. One that comes closest is probably the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is responsible for the day-to-day tasks of government weather forecasting.

Many researchers also believe that NASA’s Earth science program is critical to the national security and it’s very critical in preventing and averting disasters such as hurricanes and other extreme weather situations. There’s also a very real threat of a solar storm in our lifetime and that could only be predicted by NASA’s Earth science program. This program is also of great help for the US army, who rely heavily on GPS systems for navigation, which is very easy to jam. NASA’S Earth science has plans to build a more resilient navigation system for the army that would strengthen the US army, but without Earth science data the program would never take off.

According to Abdalati, losing half of NASA's mission would mean giving up on part of what makes us human. "As human beings, throughout time, we have explored our surroundings and we have worked to understand our environment and we looked as far beyond as we could," he said.

And NASA epitomizes both the drives-to understand and to explore.
