With creepers running over the shelves in the bookshop, El Péndulo has books spanning two storeys. A visitor can also sit at the café and listen to live music. Celebrating 20th anniversary in 2013, the bookshop tamped 1000 books with the message “This is a free book. Read it and return it to another public place.”

As Venice is a city floating over the water, Liberia Acqua Alta—bookshop in the heart of Venice is the world’s only ‘high water bookshop’. As the location is canal side, staffs are required to take a special care of the books. When flood approaches this place, books are taken to higher grounds from the floor—bathtubs, and higher shelves.
