India's Shame: Social Evils That Still Persist

Domestic violence:

Violence against women remains widespread and pervasive in India. Although there were some positive steps taken after the 2012 Delhi gang rape, there has been very little done since then.

Women in Indian society have been victims of humiliation, torture and exploitation for as long as we have written records of social organization and family life.

Today, though women are being gradually recognized as important, powerful and meaningful contributors to the life of men; but cruel practices still thrive even today.

In spite of the legislative measures adopted in favor of women in India after Independence, the spread of education and women’s gradual economic independence, countless women still continue to be victims of violence and extreme cruelty.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau, a total of 244,270 incidents of crimes against women were reported in the country in 2012 as compared with 228,650 in 2011 which is a surge of 6.4 percent.
