India Has Highest Number Of Suicides In The World: WHO

The small state of Goa has a relatively very high number with over 22 percent of suicide rate in the state. States that are poorer economically, Tripura has over 25 percent and Chhattisgarh has over 17 percent. All these percentages are calculated for every one lakh people in the total population.

Northern States: These states are not as developed as the southern states and do not command a rich IT environment, and their suicide rates are relatively lesser than the south. Bihar has the least suicide rate with only 0.9 percent, Uttar Pradesh with over 2 percent and the National Capital has over 11 percent suicide rate. This is a shame that the southern states which are more educated and developed to have higher suicide rates than the northern states.

This report also points out that youths are the ones who are more prone to taking their own lives or either attempting to take their own lives. WHO has urged nations around the world to take all steps necessary to prevent this social evil that is increasing each year.

Among the Indian states Kerala and Karnataka showed signs of a decrease in suicide attempts but not at a number where there can be a total end to this evil.

Manipur has the lowest suicide rate with less than 0.2 percent.

Reports from WHO suggests that 80 percent of the total suicides are victims who are educated and come from good family background. This also leads to the fact that the working class people attempt or commit suicide more than the non working class people or relatively the poor people.
