I-Day: Remembering India's Top 10 Women Freedom Fighters




Sarojini Naidu:

Well known as “The Nightingale of India,” Sarojini Naidu was one such woman who dared to step out and take the reins of leadership in her own hands during a time when women were confined only to the four corners of the house.

She dedicated her life to achieve the freedom for women, united the Hindu and the Muslims and also improved the status and lives of Indians. She was the great follower of Mahatma Gandhi and followed his principles with full dedication.

 Sarojini Naidu was the first woman governor and first Indian woman to become the President of Indian National Congress. She is much remembered as an icon of courage, self-confidence and women’s pride.

Sucheta Kiplani:

One of Mahatma Gandhi’s close associates in partition riots, Sucheta Kriplani was the freedom fighters who actively participated in the Indian Freedom Struggle. She also came to the forefront during Quit India Movement.

Sucheta was one of the few women who were elected to the Constituent Assembly and brought recognition to the Indian womanhood through her courage and personality.

She was the first woman to be elected as the Chief Minister in India. Even after independence, she still immensely served the country and dedicated her life for the betterment of the lives of Indians.
