Ebola Scare Reaches Delhi: Man Tests Positive

Ebola Alert in India-ICMRBy far, India has been free of Ebola, which is termed as the 'most serious health crisis in modern times' by World Health Organization. The deadly virus however claimed about 5,200 lives in West Africa and two in the U.S.

Meanwhile, questions arise in the media if India is prepared to face the deadly attack, in case there is a disease outbreak out here.

The ICMR chief said the patient will be tested again, repeatedly, over the next few days to rule out the presence of any virus before he is allowed to leave the quarantine zone. He did not comment on the possibility of the man having infected someone already during travel. Therefore, all the suspected Ebola affected passengers are being shifted to IGI for a thorough surveillance.

"As per WHO specifications, the person is deemed cured since the blood samples have tested negative for EVD," the official said. "However, as has been reported in the past, the virus may continue to be positive in secretions such as urine and semen for a longer time. Before releasing him from quarantine, a decision was taken to test his other body fluids."

The authorities kept the family aware of the situation and his health conditions. At present, the citizens need not panic about the spread of the disease. Also all the major airports and ports are under supervision. If in case the epidemic breaks in India, the consequences could be devastating considering the large population size.
