Udaipur: The Proud Owner Of India's Biggest Telescope

BANGALORE: Udaipur, which was earlier known for its historical importance in link with the Rajputanas will now be known for something else. And that ‘something else’ makes India proud as country's biggest telescope has been recently inaugurated at the Udaipur Solar Observatory, reports ht.

The telescope installed in Udaipur will be second in place after China in the world to have the multi application solar telescope (MAST) feature for a detailed study of the sun's activities. Thereby, enabling the scientists to have a closer look and have a better understanding of the solar flares that happen on the surface.

This project has been authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and funded by the department of science. Till now 26 crore were spent on the project and it will be carried under the jurisdiction of Physical Research Laboratory of Ahmedabad.

The reason behind installing it in the Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) which is one of the six GONG (Global Oscillations Network Group) sites in the world is because it is surrounded by water which keeps the temperature cool and pleasant. This is the ambient condition for the telescope allowing the observers to watch the sun properly even during day time.

The MAST was designed in 2004, built with optical instruments added in 2008 and installed at the Udaipur Observatory in 2012. The telescope's rear part was developed by the Udaipur Observatory while the front is developed by ISRO.
