Uber Rape Impact: Delhi Streets to Be Patrolled By Drones

BANGALORE: With the plights faced by women in Delhi, security measures have been propped up in the capital. The recent Uber rape case has got citizens questioning as to whether security measures are actually ensuring safety. In this context, Delhi police are now planning to set out drones in the Indian sky for the atonement and protection of women throughout Delhi. This isn't the first time that the police are seeking help from technology, in the form of flying objects, reports Huffington post.

"With this project, North Delhi will become the first district with complete camera surveillance in Delhi. This would be achieved with the combined range of  CCTVs and drones. The only areas which will be kept out of it will be the LG House, Delhi Assembly and Metcalfe House," said a senior police official. Delhi Police have taken rented  drones from DRDO at around 50,000 per day and have already pilot tested this year and were used for monitoring the immersions of Lord Durga and Ganesha into Yamuna.

The drones have a flight of approximately 200 metres of the ground and cover a hexagonal grid area of three to four kilometers. They have inbuilt night-vision cameras for round the clock tracking and are also equipped with advanced technologies that prevent them from overlapping with each other.

"We can further enhance its capabilities by linking each drone to a Quick Response Teams (QRT). The video can be streamed to the QRT vehicle which will monitor it in real time and respond quickly if it sees something wrong," he said. Drones project will play a significant role as a means of security. The project is officially said to be launched in north district area by next month.
