The Real Life Mardaani: Sanjukta Parashar, IPS

BENGALURU: The iron lady of Assam, the real ‘mardaani’ of India, Sanjukta Parashar is the only fear factor for militants in the state. Sanjukta, the present Superintendent of Police of Jorhat district in Assam, fights the gender war on the streets besides the naxals in jungles.

Parashar, a mother of two kids often leads the CRPF jawans with AK-47 in hand in the treacherous terrains to carry out the anti-insurgency operations. One look and you would know that the local Bodo militants fear this lady. Why wouldn’t they? Parashar shot over 16 militants and arrested more than 64 of them in the recent past.

Sanjukta Parashar

She chose the road less traveled, she holds a Ph.D in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University and could have easily got a high-paying job, but she chose the services. She even encourages the youth in Assam to work for the government. Parashar scored 85th rank in All India UPSC examinations and chose the IPS over IAS unlike the rest of her batch mates.

Parashar is the first ever woman IPS officer from Assam. This 2006 batch IPS joined the services as Assistant Commandant of Makum in 2008 and within hours of her posting in Makum she was sent to Udalguri to control the ethnic clashes between Bodo and illegal Bangladeshi migrants.

And don’t be surprised to see her distributing candies to bikers wearing helmets. She constantly visits relief camps and the tribes and also manages to meet her IAS husband and kids.
