BANGALORE: In a country like India, where the tradition of marriage is given great significance, it is in fact strange, that there are many politicians who still maintained a single status for the welfare of the country and people. Of the number of bachelor politicians, many held extremely important posts. Here is the list of some prominent Indian politicians who are still unmarried, as compiled by Yahoo.

Jayalalithaa: Three-term Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, is one of India's most powerful politicians who have maintained single status. Widely known as Amma or mother to her supporters, she was once a Tamil film actress who had lead roles in nearly 100 movies.

She got her political start through former co-star M G Ramchandran's party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Khazagham or AIADMK. After the death of Ramchandran in 1987, the charismatic Jayalalithaa took over the reins of the party and went on to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1991.
Today, she is one of the few leaders of regional groups whose growing prominence over the past decade has made it impossible for national parties to rule alone in India.
