Sky is Not the Limit for the World's Highest Points in India


BENGALURU: How many of us are aware of the International Mountain Day which is on 11th of December, declared by UN General Assembly over a decade ago, only to create awareness about the importance of mountains? Not many of us are aware of this day which is widely observed in the west and few countries in the east.

India is largely associated with mountains and some of them are amusingly fascinating and most of us miss out on them. From the highest battle field to the highest cricket pitch a lot of interesting places are located up there. Daily News and Analysis (DNA) listed the following places terming them as the most amusing places up on the mountains other than the regular tourist spots:

Highest Motorable Road:  Khardung La

A mountaineer always wishes for a destination  full of surprisesd. There is a lot to explore and expect form Ladakh. Avid riders from India wouldn’t miss out on a ride on the world’s highest motorable road in Khardung La, Leh. La, in Tibetan means a mountain pass and Khardung La takes you through a bumpy, murky route and goes through Phyang. This one hour journey can be the most splendid one which one can ever have. The continuous stretch of white snow may hurt one’s eyes but the beauty is unbeatable. Khardung la tells you that the altitude is 18,380 ft, according to Google Earth, GPS and SRTM the elevation is 17,582 ft. Marsimek La that is further above Khardung La is at 18,953 ft but this road is not open to civilians as it is near the India-China Road of Control.
