Sherya Singhal at 21 Battles for Free Speech in India

Bangalore: India has a new advocate who has the people’s interest at heart. The 21 year old daughter of Manal Singhal is all set to get rid of the ambiguity related to the freedom of speech, mostly concentrating on the IT Act 66(a). Manal Singhal is one of the Supreme Court’s lawyers. Even Manal Singhal’s late mother, Sunanda Bhandare, was a judge, one of the few female justices in Delhi back in the days. Now stepping in her family’s footsteps Sherya Singhal is all set to become a litigator, as reported by Margherita Stancati and Preetika Rana for India Real Time.

Sherya is a graduate in astrophysics from U.K. and now is preparing to apply to law school. She has taken her first admission test recently. While sorting out her school applications Sherya is mainly preoccupied with a recent incident that shook the fundamental core of India. Taking the matter of cyber arrest for commenting to another level, she has challenged the constitutionality of a law which according to her violates the freedom of expression.

It all began with the temporary arrest of the two girls accused of hate speech for the message posted on Facebook.  Not only Shaheen Dhada, the girl who posted the comment, apologized for it, she also closed her Facebook Profile.  Shreya Singhal, furious with the incident said to her mother, “It was such an innocuous comment,” as reported by India Real Time.
