Over 1 Lakh Indian Children Go Missing Each Year

BANGALORE: It is an undeniable fact that childhood is an eternal bliss for every person. It is the best time of one’s life. But, unfortunately, there are many children who are torn way from their childhood and subjected to miserable and abusive life.

Today in India, ‘missing children’ has been highlighted as one of the biggest problems plaguing the society.
According to government data, over 1.5 lakh children have gone missing, and out of which, an average of 45 percent of them remain untraced.

A year ago, a Supreme Court bench, fumed over the case of 1.7 lakh missing children, questioned the government's action, "Nobody seems to care about missing children. This is the irony," reports Deeptiman Tiwary of The Times of India.

The latest data of missing children given out by the Home Ministry in Parliament revealed that between the year 2011 to mid 2014, more than 3.25 lakh children went missing—that is an average of almost 1 lakh children is missing every year.

The figures are all the more worrying, since out of those missing, 55 percent are girls. This has raised a fear of whether they have been either killed or pushed into begging or prostitution rackets.

Among Indian states, in terms of missing children, Maharashtra is one of the worst states with over 50,000 cases followed by states like Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh with less than 25,000 missing children.

However, the experts opined that many children who fall prey to such problems are mostly from rural India and some from urban poor family who left their home due to poverty or physical abuse. They remain the easy target for racket or abuse.

Despite rising reports of such cases, it is indeed sad that India still didn’t implement a stringent law that specially focuses on tracing missing children.
