Nearly 600 Of The 5,050 Pilots In Indian Airlines Are Women: Survey

BENGALURU: According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, out of 5,050 pilots in the Indian Airlines, 600 of them are women. On the brighter side, India has seen a steady rise in women pilots annually and in the last five years there were about 4,267 commercial pilots' licences issued out of which 628 went to women, reports The Times Of India.

Apparently, the main outcome of this trend is that Indian carriers are hiring more women pilots. For example the Jet Group had about 152 women pilots in 2011 and now it has 194, which is the highest in India. "There has been a steady growth of about 10 percent year on year in the number of women pilots joining the airline," says a Jet official. . At IndiGo, 11 percent of pilots are women. "The number is definitely growing. Of the pilots that joined from April 2014, 16.5 percent are women," says an official from Indigo.

However, SpiceJet and GoAir also reported that the number of women pilots are more, and the merged Air India-Indian Airlines has the second largest number of women pilots which stands at 171. It often has an all-women crew operating its longest non-stop flights to the U.S. The DGCA data shows that even during a crisis in the Indian aviation, high percentage of women opted to train for commercial pilot licences.
