BANGALORE: With the number of crime against women in the form of rape increasing every now and then, it has indeed become an acute disease in the Indian society.

As per the UN data, India, with 1.8 cases of rape per lakh population figures third among top 10 countries where highest number of rape have taken place in 2010 while in cases of murder, the country comes second in 2012.

At times, the situations are worsened with the insensitive remarks given by the prominent personalities in the country. Here are 9 such controversial comments as listed by Yahoo.

Mulayam Singh Yadav:

In a crucial time when security of women is a major issue and concern in India, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav gives a highly insensitive and controversial statement. According to him, it was wrong to give capital punishment to rapists. The statement was given to oppose the new anti-rape law and Yadav said that his party would change the law that entails death for rape.

Mulayam said, "Rape accused should not be hanged. Men make mistakes," reports Times of India.

The SP chief further cites that there was a need to change the new rape law that provide death sentence to repeat rape offenders.
