5. Joshi-Abdhyankar murders:

The Joshi-Abdhyankar murders are serial murders committed between January 1976 and March 1977 by Dilip Sutar, Rajendra Jakkal, Munawar Harun Shah and Shantaram Kanhoji Jagtap. The quartet murderers were all commercial art students of Pune. They often stole two wheelers for money, and indulged in boozing. During the mid 70’s, they took away the lives of ten people altogether at different instances. For instance, the group attacked noted Sanskrit scholar Kashinath Shastri Abhyankar, and killed him along with his four family members, and looted the valuables.

The group was detained on 30th March 1977. After both the high court and Supreme Court turned down their appeals, the accused approached the President for a mercy plea. But, the plea was not granted, and the four were hanged at the Yerwada Central Jail on 27th November 1983.
