Majority of NGOs Under Scanner in India

BANGALORE: Today, India has a mushrooming growth of non-governmental organizations operating in and around the country. As per the data given  by Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, many such organizations during the financial year 2012-13 received a whooping sum of 11,838 crore as foreign funding and also comes under CBI scanner.

Kiren Rijiju in a written reply in Rajya Sabha said, "There are various Non-Governmental Organizations working across the country. Most of these are associated with schemes of various ministries, departments and state concerns. Ministry of Home Affairs deals with the NGOs which are getting contributions from foreign sources. As on date, 42,529 organizations are registered under Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act, 2010. As per available information, during the year 2012-13, a total sum of 11,838 crore approximately was received as foreign contribution from 164 countries," reports The Times of India.

The CBI reported to the apex court that though there is a skyrocketing growth of NGOs, the responsibility extended by most of the NGOs is still questionable. This is because many of them fail to submit accurate reports and details regarding the grant and spending to the income tax authorities.

Based on the complaints received in the past and enquiries conducted, there are over 20 cases referred to CBI and 10 cases have been referred to state police for investigation with regard to complaints of fraudulent activities received against NGOs, Rijiju further exclaimed.

"If you take money legally and use for illegal activities, whenever necessary action will be initiated. If the source (of the funds) is illegal, then there has to be an enquiry," he added.

Minister of State for Home Affairs also said that the source of information is based on "the inputs which we received from IB (Intelligence Bureau)." "There is information with the Intelligence Bureau. The statements (submitted) in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are based on the inputs which we received from IB," reports TOI.
