India Reported As A Favorite Location Of Cyber-Criminals

BENGALURU: With over 350 million active internet users and about 134 million social media users, India was the most targeted country in Asia and second in the world by scammers last year. Being the country with second largest number of active internet users, India witnessed an increase of 156% in social media scams with every sixth scam globally impacting an Indian, reports the security software firm Symantec.

Reports also brings into the scene an enormous statistic that states  94% of these scams were spread through manual sharing, proving that India's growing social media population continues to be a favored target of scammers. Scammers are reported to be using social media to influence the trust people have in their own social circles to spread scams, fake links and phishing the contents. After ranking 6th in 2014, India now ranks 18th as a source of spam in recent reports. Even though India continues to be ranked as the third top source of overall malicious activity, the country is losing its tag as a spam capital of the world, due to the steady decrease in the amount of spam originating from its borders.
