How India's Elections 2014 Sparks Interest in the U.S.?

BANGALORE: India’s much-talked about Parliamentary election that was held recently is being increasingly viewed in the U.S. as one of most important elections. Americans and Indians in America have keenly watched and scrutinized the polls. This is mainly because more than 50 crore people executed their voting rights all over the country giving a total voting turnout of 65 percent, reports Economic Times.

On top of the aforementioned reasons, it was also India’s new 10 crore voters and the episodes of Modi’s visa denial that have grab the eyeballs of the Americans and also Indian-Americans.

Keeping abreast of the development in India, a cross-section of people from America dialed  into a unique conference call that discussed election related topics every week, said the US Indian Political Action Committee, a bipartisan organization that works to impact policy on issues of concern to the Indian-American community in the U.S.

Nigel Harris, President and MD, Ford India opined, “The power and openness for everybody to contest, discuss and then elect is what makes India special and worthy of being world's biggest democracy,” reports ET.

The deployment of ‘New Media’ in this election to woo crores of electorates was also another feature that brought the attention of the super-power country.

“Having seen the Indian democracy at its energetic, vibrant and exhilarating best, I can safely conclude that if there is anything that can beat cricket in mass appeal, it is the great Indian elections,” added Harris.
