Govt Lifts Ban On Adult Sites sans Child Pornography

BANGALORE: Following the mass criticism on the internet, the Indian government lifted the ban on 857 adult sites that do not have pornographic content involving children, reports The Tribune.

The Department of Telecommunications had ordered Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block 857 porn sites on July 31. The ban prompted debates all over the nation and triggered an outrage on the internet which led the government to lift the ban partially and review the order issued on August 4.

"The government is directing Internet service providers to disable porn sites featuring child pornography as an interim measure. Other considerations will be looked into after court hearing," a high-ranking source said.

However the Department of Telecommunications hasn’t made it clear which ‘hardcore’ pornographic sites will still remain under the ban.

"The government compliments the dissemination of idea on the social media. We have launched the mygov platform seeking views of people of India on developmental agenda and lakhs of people are participating on this platform," said Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Prasad emphasized that the NDA government supports the freedom in social media and internet.

"I reject with contempt the charge that it is a Talibani government, as being said by some of the critics. Our government supports free media, respect communication on social media and has respected freedom of communication always," said Prasad defending the department’s decision.
