Google CEO Sundar Pichai's India Visit: 8 Key Announcements


BENGALURU: Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently hosted an event at Delhi and explained the company’s focus on India. He said that India is a primary focus for Google and the company is focusing on improving internet adoption in the country. He also mentioned that the country may soon surpass U.S. by next year in Android use and over five billion Internet users are expected in the country by 2020, compiles BGR.

Google is part of India’s Digital India initiative by the present government and the company has already promised affordable internet in rural India via Project Loon and free Wi-Fi services at Indian railway stations. Sundar Pichai and team gave an update on these initiatives and gave a glimpse of how the company is optimizing its apps and services for India and its needs.

Languages And Multilingual Keyboard

Google recently added two Indian languages with Android Marshmallow and it is also planning to launch regional languages for various apps. Google has also partnered with Intex and Lava to preinstall the keyboard on smartphone vendors’ forthcoming smartphones and announced the Google Indic keyboard with the support for 11 regional languages.

Google Translate

Google Translate now works with other Indic languages such as Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu among others. Next year, Google will also be introducing a ‘tap to translate’ feature, as the name suggests it will let users translate text on any app to Hindi, which will also be available offline.
