BANGALORE: In India, the news about potholed roads, crime on rise, corruption, litter and many other social issues, make us hang our heads down. But then, there are many unsung heroes who shine on their field by developing something out of the box and making us proud.

Here is a list of many such personalities as compiled by Yahoo.

Arunachalam Muruganantham:

Arunachalam Muruganantham is the man who identified the need for an inexpensive solution to unsanitary and unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India.

He created and patented a machine which could manufacture low-cost sanitary pads for less than a one-third of the cost of commercial pads.

Muruganantham founded the company, Jayashree Industries, which markets these machines to rural women all over India providing employment. His innovation has been praised for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness and his commitment to the society has earned him several awards.

"In a small south Indian town, a man's empathy for his wife has sparked a revolution," reports Time. The article describes the moment when Muruganantham asked his wife why she collected dirty clothes and got the reply that she needed them during menstruation, it turned him into a health crusader.
