Doordarshan To Soon Offer TV Channels on Smartphones

BENGALURU: Since mobile technology is growing at immense speed and scalability Prasar Bharati is experimenting on its new pilot project to reach out better to the new generation viewers amidst various infrastructural challenges. Doordarshan, now looks to offer TV channels on smartphones.

In the blueprint sent to Information & Broadcast Ministry (I&B), Prasar Bharati plans to create a bouquet of around 20 free-to-air channels, including all the DD channels and other top free-to-air channels on the Smartphones without using the internet of telecom broadband.

While the world has moved from terrestrial to satellite, Doordarshan (DD)was left behind—A true scenario rightly explained by Prasar Bharati’s CEO , Jawahar Sicar. DD the national public television is almost invisible in today’s world. Therefore Jawahar Sircar came up with a pilot project to take a big leap ahead of existing infrastructure, which he says is the only way to catch the new era on-the-go viewers.

This ambitious pilot project, if approved will be the biggest ever infrastructural changes brought in by the I&B. since new generation spend considerable amount of time on Smartphones and Tablets, these trends have forced Prasar Bharati to take this big decision. The project calls for an extensive infrastructural revamp to achieve the goals.

Sircar said, “There are a large number of installed transmitters that can be used to send digital signals directly to a device through an external dongle or an inbuilt chip designed specially to do so.” The plan is to design a dongle or an internal chip that can be operated by installed transmitters to send digital signals. The project plan is undergoing in-house tests in New Delhi. Also this self funded project might face some Hardware challenges and its own set of limitations, as said by Sircar.
