Dominance of Hindi, Jayalalithaa, Karunanidhi Slams Government

BANGALORE: The newly formed NDA government’s decision to uphold Hindi on government websites and social media has racked controversy, with major political parties. Most recently, the DMK slams the Centre of “imposing” the language on non-Hindi speaking masses too, reports Hindustan Times.

The 90-year old DMK chief M Karunanidhi said "Giving priority to Hindi will be construed as a first step towards attempt at creating differences among non-Hindi speaking people and making them second class citizens." Karunanidhi is one such leader who spearheaded the anti-Hindi agitation in the 1960s in the state. He further retorts that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should focus on economic growth and social development.

"It is the desire and appeal of all well wishers of the nation that Prime Minister Modi should focus on accelerating economic growth and social development."

While the government decision was attacked by DMK chief, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said he will promote use of Hindi in all official work and public life and his senior Rajnath Singh sought to down play the controversy by saying the Centre will promote all languages of the country.

Director, official language, Avadesh Kumar Mishra who came in support of the circular wrote in the directive ,"All officers and employees who operate official accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Google, Youtube should use Hindi and English languages. Prominence should be given to Hindi."
