City Waste-Picker to Attend COP 21 at Paris


 BANGALORE: The BBMP aims at bringing in strict measures in the city in hopes of installing efficient waste segregation by Bangalore’s citizens. Meanwhile a 33-year-old waste-picker who goes by the name Mansoor Ahmed, will be attending the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP (Conference of Parties) 21 held in Paris during November 30 to December 11. His beliefs and hardwork towards spreading awareness has led him to Paris to address participants from around the world, reports Bangalore Mirror.

In his speech he will bring out the significance of waste segregation and creating awareness in which 75 pct of his customers had taken up this practice. Mansoor is fluent in Tamil, Hindi and Kannada however he admitted that English wasn’t one of them. He said "English is not a problem as long as my work talks for me. I'm genuine and there is sincerity in my work which will speak for me. Besides, I will have a translator. As part of my talk, I will be narrating my journey from a seven-year old rag-picker to what I'm today". His team consists of 12 members at Jayanagar DWCC who maintain the supply of 10-12 tones of dry waste on a monthly basis.

Hasiru Dala, which is a coalition member the AIW and an organisation of waste-pickers and waste workers, is sponsoring Mansoor's 10-day trip.

Mansoor runs the Dry Waste Collection Centre (DWCC) (recyclables and inorganic waste sorting unit or aggravation) in ward 168 of Jayanagar. He also took the extra measure to go from door-to-door in promoting the segregation of daily wastes by dropping it at the DWCC.
The day to day collection of the DWCC goes around 120 kg from waste-pickers. The DWCC obtains one tonne of waste from the apartment’s collection of wastes. Mansoor has incorporated a rotating fund of `3,000 to purchase wastes from the apartments.
