Center Suspects On Mobile Apps In Plea To SC

BENAGLURU: India the country that has more than 1.2 billion population and providing the authenticated identity proof has been widely discussed all over the country. Though the citizens are issued voter IDs and Passports to use as an identity card, the previous UPA government launched Aadhar Card project to register biometric details of the citizens and Aadhar card was said to be the comprehensive identity proof in the future, as reported by the ET.

Subsequently the Supreme Court  overturned the importance of the Aadhar card and sentenced that I was not mandatory in availing any governmental benefits.

The Narendra Modi government also foresaw the need of the biometric based identity and thus it continued the plea for implementing Aadhaar card, in the supreme court. As a consequence, the Supreme Court’s judgement limited the need of card by stating ‘voluntary’ for enrolling and availing benefits related to LPG, kerosene and PDS subsidies.

The three-judge SC bench barred any further usage of the Aadhaar Card by suspecting it as a violation of a citizens’ right to privacy and transferred the case to the larger bench of the respective court.

The bench comprised of Justices MY Eqbal, C Nagappan, Arun Mishra, Amitava Roy and headed by the Chief Justice HL Dattu took up the proceeding, in which the Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi backed the government’s plea by stating "How can a scheme in which 92 crore people have enrolled be stopped for one or two objecting to it." he also mentioned the interest of deprived class, who have no other ID proof to avail benefits from welfare programs like Prime Minister's Jan-Dhan Yojana.

In order to counter the question of privacy, Rohatgi argued that it is much safer and secure compared to most of the mobile apps, through which the location of the phone user can be marked. He also stated that major social media apps from U.S have agreed to share their data with the government and its security agencies.
