Center Mandates Women To Co-own The Govt Houses

BENGALURU: Women empowerment is gradually entering the public offices in India. Central Government has made for a provision to enforce financial empowerment of women from economically weaker sections (EWS) and lower income groups (LIG) to be sole or co-owner of the flats under affordable housing scheme. According to the mandatory provision either the mother or wife of the owner will co-own the flats alongside the beneficiary.

Their names will now be included during registration under the government's newly introduced flagship program, "Housing for All" scheme, named as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). As per the plan Government proposes to build two crore houses for the underprivileged in coming seven years.

To facilitate better distribution of resources, Center intends to classify the preferences for disabled and aged citizens with specific guidelines to allot ground floor or lower floor flats.

TOI reports that the allotment of flats will even be expanded to other vulnerable sections of society including transgenders, widows and SC/ STs.

A Government official said that. "The provision of ownership of a flat to women has been included so that they have a greater say in the domestic affairs. Several states have taken initiatives such as reduction in stamp duty and electricity bills if the house is registered in the name of women.”

Meanwhile the new houses under the program will utilize latest technology to complete the project at a faster rate. However this latest technology must abide by the safety instructions.
