Brand Experts: Airtel May Need To Withdraw Airtel Zero

BANGALORE:  Bharthi Airtel’s controversial Airtel Zero plan is drawing flak from multiple sources. Customers are enraged, and the company’s competitors also say that Airtel has handled the situation very badly. The stock fell 3.58 percent to Rs 409.25 in intraday trade.

While Airtel believes that the scheme doesn't violate the concept of an open Internet, many experts say that it does. The company's brand image has been damaged, and India's chief telco may have to withdraw the scheme to undo it.

An anonymous senior executive at a competing telco reported being annoyed at the way Airtel went about marketing the product. "Over-the-top publicity wasn't required, which has now put all our free offer plans under the spotlight," he said. "Why tomtom something which even slightly borders on this tricky issue, especially at a time the Trai's consultation paper has already caused enough heartburn?"
