Bangalore Student Won The International Brain Bee Competition In U.S.

BANGALORE: IT Capital of India, Bangalore of late, is getting one good news after another from its students community. Just some days after a group of students bagged an award at the Harvard Model UN convention, a city girl, Gayathri Muthukumar, a Class 12th student of National Public School, Indiranagar, has won the International Brain Bee competition held in Washington DC, reports Sruthy Susan Ullas of The Times of India.

Gayathri represented India at the international challenge after winning the national finals in Mumbai. In the international level, there are students from 17 countries participating in the finals, held from August 7-10. Comprising of five rounds, it tests a student's knowledge in neurosciences.

The 1^st round consists of 25 questions based on materials provided to the competitors well in advance followed by neuroanatomy section in which students were provided clues to identify 25 parts of the brain. After that, they were given the task to identify microscopic images of the brain, as part of a neurohistology test. The last round comprised a Q & A session based on case studies.

An excited Gayathri revealed, "After the national finals, I approached two doctors from Nimhans to learn anatomy and histology. I attended classes for a week during my holidays. A neurosurgeon from Narayana Hrudayalaya guided me in disease diagnosis," reports TOI. "It was a close competition. Students from other countries like Australia had prepared well," she added recalling her experience.
