After Mid-Day Meals, Now Iron Tablets Take a Toll on Health of Indian School Kids

Bangalore: Iron tablets which are mainly prescribed for children in order to prevent them from deadly diseases like anaemia have proved fatal to children in a government school in Gurgaon. The children after consuming iron folic tablets complained of giddiness, stomach ache, vomiting and mild side effects, as reported by Times of India.

Many school students of Gurgaon government schools fell ill after eating the iron supplement tablets and the number rose to 146. But, the District health officials claimed that it might be because of the children’s psychological problems towards the tablets that led to such an incident.

Pediatrician Dr. Ramji asserted that the tablets were manufactured just in June this year and could be taken until 2015. So, there was no doubt about consuming an expired tablet that comes up with all the side effects.

Sunita Rathi, a senior health official said: "The iron tablets are being given to schoolchildren under the supervision of the doctors who are visiting all the schools. The 30 students in Bhondsi who fell sick were immediately sent to the Primary Health Centre Bhondsi," reported TOI.
