88 Percent Crorepati MLAs in Maharashtras's New Assembly

Political and electoral reforms based Non Governmental Organization, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), found that the average asset of the MLAs shot up from 4.98 crore to 10.87 crore since 2009. The numbers are only going to increase in the coming years, citing the trend.

Ajit Ranade, State Coordinator for ADR said that the report is based on the affidavits filed by the citizens. His response regarding the data is, "A large majority of people in Maharashtra remain poor, but the people's representatives only seem to be getting richer. We do not mean to say that the people's representatives need to be poor, but we observed that the average wealth of candidates has doubled compared to the last assembly elections.” Another important pattern that emerges from the data analyzed is that the winner or second runner-up is mostly the richest candidate who has filed his/her nomination from the constituency.

Ranade says that there is not much difference to define which party’s candidates have highest number of crorepatis as almost all of them are on the extreme end—which is certainly true, as the data shows 95 percent NCP and 85 percent BJP MLAs as crorepatis.
