Jats and Their Demands


The Jats are a politically influenced agricultural community belonging to Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Existence of this tribe is also found in parts of Pakistan and Balochistan. Origins of the Jats date back to the Moghal era and the Britishers conferred them as a martial race. In fact, the longest living and most decorated infantry of the Indian army is called the Jat Regiment. The present demands of the Jats are reservation under the OBC category and thereby qualify in quotas of public employment and academic systems of the country. This has already been implemented in four states but the Jats want this to expand across India.
