78 Percent Women Sexually Harassed in Delhi In 2012

Bangalore: The women in India at present are persistently questioning the level of security they can count on in terms of their safety. Since the Delhi gang rape of the late physiotherapist student there has been a rising concern regarding safety in the nation. The situation has also brought out many of the incidents where women have kept their silence when they were sexually harassed. As per a recent survey, in the past year more than 78 percent of women in Delhi have been sexually violated, as reported by Abhijit Patnaik for Hindustan Times.

The response shows why Delhi has been tagged as the rape capital. The survey recorded 661 sexual harassment incidents until December 2012 in Delhi alone. More than half the men surveyed said that women invite harassment because of the way they behave and dress. The survey was conducted among 146 men and among them 52 percent felt that as long as men don’t touch women; it’s alright for men to pass comments on them. It was also recorded that 92 men out of 100 Delhi men in the age bracket of 18 to 25 said that some or all of their friends have eve teased at public place.

A total of 500 people were interviewed for the survey by research agency MaRS in which 354 were women, who use public transport to travel in the city. MaRS conducted the survey for Hindustan Times.

Among the surveyed a large majority of respondents supported the idea of setting up fast track courts for the trial of rape cases. Three fourth said that swifter punishment is the best way forward to fight or stop sexual harassment.
