Deepa Mehta:

Deepa Mehta isan Indo-Canadian, writer and director. Deepa’s directorial venture ‘Fire’ provoked protests as the subject of the movie was based on the lesbian relationship. Subsequently, another film ‘Water’ that depicts the brutalities of child marriage in Indian society under the British Raj, also faced protests from the Right Wing activists. But the movie was well received internationally and was nominated for the Prestigious Academy Award in best foreign language movie category.

M.F. Hussain:

 

M.F. Hussain a legendary painter, but he received open threats from the religious extremists for insulting gods pertaining to a particular religion in his paintings. Nevertheless, he is a renowned iconoclast around the world  and was conferred the Padma Shri in 1966, Padma Bhushan in 1973, Padma Vibhushan in 1991 by the Indian Government.
