Organizations Ensure Employees to Spend Time off Work

Ashok Ramchandran, director-HR of Vodafone India said, "One motivator for people to not avail leave was CL encashment. Now we have removed the concept of CL encashment, thereby ensuring that employees make use of the allotted casual leaves. We have also increased the compulsory limit (for PL) to 14 from earlier 10. This will encourage people to avail leaves and maintain a healthy work-life balance."

Sumit Mitra, head, Group HR & corporate services of Godrej Industries and associate companies said, "Health cannot be equated with money. While one cannot be penalized for falling sick for an extended period of time, there is no rationale to even reward a person with money for not falling ill. Hence, at Godrej, we have removed the monetization of sick leave."

S Ramesh Shankar, executive VP (HR) of Siemens in India, said "Companies should do away with leave encashment except on retirement, where it could be considered an additional financial benefit for post-retirement expenses. While accumulation may be allowed to a reasonable level so that leaves do not lapse, the concept of encashment goes against the spirit of employee well being."
