New Kid On The Block: Rishad Premji To Join Wipro Board From May 1

Wipro chief executive officer TK Kurien said not too much should be read into the appointment, denying speculations of Rishad becoming the CEO eventually. "I had expected him to be arrogant and aloof, given his family background but was surprised and delighted at how grounded he was. He really understands the importance of reinventing Wipro in today's new era of innovation and he understands technology," said Vivek Wadha, an academician and an expert on startups and innovation.

Rishad had joined Wipro in 2007 after a stint in consulting firm Bain Consulting. He serves as the company's Chief Strategy Officer and steers its $100-million corporate venture arm.
Wipro veteran Suresh Senapaty retired in March 2015, leaving a vacancy on the company's board.

Over the years, Rishad has spearheaded several of Wipro's acquisitions and deals in the startup ecosystem, including deals with Citigroup, Gallagher Solutions, Australia-based Promax and their recent investment in Opus.
"The area of disagreement with Rishad has been with his being enamored with Silicon Valley. He had talked about investing in startups here and I told him he would lose his shirt on this because he would only get his pick of the bottom of the crop. The opportunities in India are far greater than they are here, especially given that India is about to add half a billion new Internet users," Wadhwa added.
