CHIKI SARKAR, Publisher, Penguin India

With books as her inspiration, she is making her career bloom amidst books. Being a publisher at Penguin India, the 37 years old Chiki Sarkar has only one goal in life: to publish great books and sell it like anything worldwide.

Sarkar, is the daughter of Aveek Sarkar, chief editor of the Ananda Bazaar Patrika group of publications who launched Penguin India in 1985 in a joint venture with the British Pearson group. In2006 she was Random House India’s first editor-in-chief and moved to Penguin Books in 2011.

Sarkar has been influential in publishing many finest writers such as Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, Suketu Mehta, Vikram Chandra, Amit Chaudhuri and Pankaj Mishra. She was also behind the launch of the careers of some of the best talents such as Mohammed Hanif, Shehan Karunatilaka, Basharat Peer, Daniyal Mueenuddin and Aman Sethi. She has recently been announced as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders.
