World Bank Study On Ease Of Doing Business In India 'A Hoax': DIPP Secy

New Delhi: Dismissing the World Bank's study on ease of doing business in India as "quite a hoax", a senior government official today said that industry should not go by that report.

"Let me tell you that this World Bank study is quite a hoax. One because they don't do study all over India and have done this study only in Mumbai city and in Mumbai city there is no manufacturing and industrialisation," Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion Secretary Amitabh Kant said at a CII event.

As per the latest World Bank's report on 'ease of doing business', India had slipped three notches to 134th spot. The report ranks 189 economies on various parameters relating to business and regulatory environment.

Observing that much of the business has moved out of Mumbai, Kant, "to do (study) on ease of doing business within Mumbai to my mind does not represent India, so the study is totally flawed."

Asking the industry not to be affected by the World Bank report, he said, the government on its part will continue to work towards removing bottlenecks hampering the business environment.

"...it's important for us on our own to set right the ease of doing business so that India business flourishes," Kant added.
