Sales See a Dip for Commuter Bike Models

BANGALORE: The development of110-125 cc class of motorbikes peaked up last year as it received the favor of manufacturers. There were multiple introductions of new bikes in the same category. However, the scenario has altered now.  This segment has performed dismally. Therefore, the bikes, which once were a manufacturer’s delight, are now more of a burden for them.

The particular segment of the two wheelers met a steep fall of 6percent in the April-February period. The sales saw a dip from 1.76 to 1.65 million units in comparison to the last year as per the data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

On the other hand, the drop could account to a 3percent growth in sales of two wheelers in overall. The pickup in the sales was from 9.57 to 9.88 million units. The manufacturers had focused on the promotion of the 110-125cc category of bikes over the conventional economy bikes. The new category made no compromises with the mileage and also included additional power.

Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motors, Suzuki, and Honda had come up with new motorbikes in this segment. But apparently, the buyers are drawn towards the higher power delivering category of 125cc or a notch below of 110cc category.

Bajaj Auto (Pune) witnessed a stumbling fall of 55percent in the sales of Discover and Platina in the given period. While the leading two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero Motocorp, saw a decline of 6percent with its Super Splendor, Glamour and Ignitor Hero in the section.

Conversely, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India are the only one from the lot who witness an increase in the sales.
