Massive Blackout To Hit Five Indian States

BANGALORE: The two major power plants that fuel electricity for five majorly populated states are in critical conditions. Adani power station along with TATA power station which are both located in the Mundra region of Gujarat, have cut over 4,600 and 4,000 MW of power due to technical issues. This is a worry as the two power plants supply electricity to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and Harayana. All these states are highly industrial with heavy population.

This sudden concern saw the meeting of Power Ministers along with representatives from the five states with Union Minister Piyush Goyal.

It is also to be noted that the two power plants had approached the Central Electricity Regulation commission to give relief in tariff due to the change in prices that was made by the Indonesian Coal Corporation back in 2011. This is still an ongoing issue in the court.

The other reason for the cutting of power is that due the decrease in rain this year, the shift has been made to thermal energy as the hydrel stations are not producing enough power.

The Coal India Limited has said that they are not responsible for the decrease in stock at the concerned stations because it has supply the marked percentage of coals and that delays in power plants had led to importing of coal.

A CIL official said, “One should not forget CIL’s commitment is only for 65 per cent of the total requirement of new plants and 90 per cent of old plants, failing which the penalty clause should apply. But there has been no case in which CIL will have to pay a penalty,” reports Reddiff.com.

The only option is to stop the blame game and do everything possible to get the two power plants running at its maximum again before the stations completely give away causing total black in these five major states of India.
