'Make in India', a Distinct Possibility for Apple

BENGALURU: Apple seems to be mulling over the fact of making iPhones in India. Earlier when asked about making iPhones in India by PM Narendra Modi, Tim Cook, CEO, Apple seemed to be a bit reluctant and hesitant about the prospects of making iPhones in India. But now they seem to be pondering over the fact and giving it a serious thought. It seems that Apple has consulted one of its largest contract manufacturing partners, Foxconn Technology Group, to consider the prospect of making iPhones in India in the near future.

According to ET, "When Tim Cook was here, the government raised the issue of making in India. It is after that that Apple started thinking of doing something in India which is long term."

Manufacturing iPhones in India would lead to much cheaper Apple products in the market and quicker accessibility for the Indian customers. It would also project India as one of the production hubs; however, that would require creating an elaborate and complex supply chain.

On his first visit to India, Cook has announced the setting up an app development unit in Bengaluru, and at the same time opening a development centre for Apple Maps in Hyderabad with an investment of $25 million.

But as things stand, it might take Foxconn two to three years before the plan comes to fruition and Foxconn starts to make iPhones in India. They would also face some roadblocks in the form of higher investments and requirement of a component ecosystem. But it can be seen as appositive sign for all those in favor of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
