Jaishankar Discusses 'Multifaceted' Bilateral Ties with Malaysian Counterpart
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in a 'productive and candid' dialogue regarding the diverse bilateral relations between India and Malaysia, alongside regional and global affairs, with his Malaysian counterpart Mohamad bin Haji Hasan. This discussion took place during Jaishankar's visit to Kuala Lumpur, marking the concluding leg of his three-nation tour covering Singapore, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
During the meeting with Hasan, Jaishankar delved into various aspects of Malaysia-India bilateral relations, exchanging perspectives on mutual interests, and addressing regional and international challenges. The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the discussion as "productive and candid," highlighting the exploration of multifaceted dimensions within the bilateral relationship.
Among the topics covered were plans for high-level exchanges and the scheduling of the 7th Joint Commission Meeting between Malaysia and India. This encounter marked the first official meeting between Jaishankar and Hasan since Hasan assumed office in December 2023.
Later in the day, Jaishankar is set to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo. The visit aims to bolster cooperation between India and Malaysia while fostering a deeper understanding of shared opportunities and challenges.
The ties between Malaysia and India are deeply rooted, featuring robust economic partnerships and close people-to-people connections. Notably, in 2023, India emerged as Malaysia's 12th largest global trading partner, with bilateral trade totaling RM 77.76 billion (USD 16.53 billion), according to the statement released by the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
