Government Clears Proposal For Making Six Submarines In India

NEW DELHI: In a boost to domestic defence manufacturing, the government Saturday cleared a proposal to manufacture six submarines worth 50,000 crore in India.

The Request for Proposal (RFP) will, however, be open for "compliant yards", defence ministry sources said.

The government aims at manufacturing all six submarines in the time frame of a year.

These submarines will have features including stealth and attack cruise missiles.

A committee will be set up by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) to decide on the shipyards that will be issued RFPs for these submarines.

All six submarines will be made in one shipyard.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has cleared the manufacture of 2 midget submarines to be made indigenously. Jaitley has in principle ordered the making of 6 submarines. The final clearance is expected later this year
