Differences Over Trade Policy Affecting Indo-U.S. Relationship

Bangalore: India-U.S. bilateral relation is set to hit a new low as the government of India is ready to bar its officials from interacting with the visiting dignitaries of the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC). The USITC delegation is visiting India to probe the impact of the trade and investment policies of India on American businesses, reports TOI.

The USITC at the request of the Senate Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Ways and Means has started an investigation to look into the IPR regime of India and is set to submit the final report by 30th November. The report will decide if India will be given the Priority Foreign Country status- the equivalent of being named the worst offender of intellectual property rights policy. The Priority Foreign Country designation will allow the U.S. to impose sanctions against India.

Mark Elliot, executive vice-president, Global intellectual property centre, U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, “We want a level field for American companies and what we are seeing is that India is continuing to follow restrictive trade practices. There has been a complete deterioration of the innovation climate, which is bad for innovation, bad for investment. We want to figure out a path forward,” ,reports Business Standard.
