Darjeeling Tea Would Be Auctioned Online Now

BENGALURU: Gone are the days of age-old secretive practices followed in tea auctioneering. Even the most cherished and sought after Darjeeling Tea would soon be auctioned in the online platform. The global buyers of ‘Darjeeling Tea’ would be able to purchase their favorite variety in the online auction and the e-trading is set to begin in the last week of June, reports Sumit Moitra of DNA India. The costliest tea variety would be auctioned off on the platform created by IT wing of National Stock Exchange.

The love for the quality of Camellia Sinensis from Darjeeling can be evinced from the price being paid for it, which is 54 times of its easily available competitors.

However, the e-auction has made the conservative buyer a bit nervous as there would no longer be a personal touch in the entire process. The e-auction system integrates the process starting from creation of invoices till the delivery of tea from the warehouses, enabling better control and avoiding duplication of work thus reducing time.

Online auction of tea is not any extraordinary idea and other varieties have been sold via online route since 2009. The e-auction platform for tea, which is under the aegis of Tea Board, registers a sale of 534 million kg every year.
