Glassbeam is a firm with focus on Machine data. The Santa Clara, CA based firm employs next generation cloud-based analytics platform for effective analysis of multi-structured data. The company has received a funding of $3.3 million from VKRM Group

The future of the Machine Data Analytics Industry will be defined by three fundamentally favorable trends: Cost of Sensors, Connectivity and Analytics. With all these cost factors headed towards a perfect storm, the industry is in for a change. In the case of Cost of Sensors, there has been a spectacular drop in sensor prices, especially during the last few years. Mobile phones would be the best example to talk about the drop in prices from hundreds of dollars a few years ago to the more recent rate of less than a dollar per sensor. Also, cost of connectivity and WiFi has plummeted with providers actively subsidizing the network costs with value added services. Finally, cost of analytics required to crunch big data has been revolutionized with cheaper cloud computing and open source technologies like Hadoop, Mahout and others.

Trends Gaining Significance

I believe the biggest trend in the current industry is the seismic shift in the number of connected devices and the volumes of machine data that would be available online within the next few years. Billions of devices with trillions of embedded sensors will generate thousands of terabytes in streams or batch files, which if properly collected, managed, searched, analyzed and mined; would result in unprecedented value for manufacturers, service providers and end users.

Challenging Aspects

With the gold-rush time prevailing once again, the next few years could be significant for the industry. Entrepreneurs would find different kinds of opportunities and uncertainties on business models with the attempts to capture value from machine data. Business leaders would encounter the urgent need to remain nimble and adapt to customer demands. Enterprises should be willing to deviate from the normal path to achieve success. Seeking and retaining top notch talent would be another challenge as engineering and data scientist skills needed to be effective in machine data analytics industry will remain fluid and cutting edge.
