Nokia To Launch Its First Android Phone

Bangalore: Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has announced that it will launch an inexpensive Android Smartphone. This has raised a few eyebrows as Nokia is a long standing partner of Microsoft. Nokia having all their phones on Windows OS was the norm until now but it has planned to launch a handset based on Google’s android platform, reports Economic Times.

Nokia which is in the final stages of being acquired by Microsoft, will show off the new phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month according to sources.

Both Nokia and Microsoft refused to comment on the matter. The new gadget is aimed at emerging markets including India. It is not a surprise that the gadget is not having some of the custom features of high-end Android phone.

Microsoft and its main handset partner Nokia have failed make a mark in smartphone market dominated by Samsung's Android devices and Apple's iPhone. Its Lumia series is the only face saver.

According to Strategy Analytics, a research firm, 79 percent of the phones world-wide had Android as its OS, last year. Apple's iOS has 15 percent market-share and while only 4 percent of phones used Windows interface.
