Sony Xperia S

Price: Rs. 26600 - Rs. 34000
The Good: Sony Xperia S promises to be a wonderful gift to its users. The phone comes filled with features, ideas and technology that would make anyone want to own this phone. It wouldn’t be speaking out of turn if the phone was dubbed as an alternative to the Apple’s iPhone 4S.
The 12 mega pixel camera is another crowd puller towards the phone. This is indeed a smartphone to own!

The Bad: In spite of its positive points Xperia S does have a few flaws. The three Android buttons on the phone aren’t very sensitive and at times you might have to press the button a few times to get it to operate.

The Bottom Line: An owner’s pride and the neighbor’s envy could be an apt line to describe this smartphone from Sony.

Design: The Sony Xperia S is just 11mm thick that makes it extremely slim and sleek. Like Xperia Go is clad in tactile rubberised plastic so is this handset. The phone has three Android controls - back, home and menu which are placed on a touch-sensitive strip which is located beneath the screen. Though Sony claims that the strip is sensitive at times you will actually find yourself pressing the buttons a few times to get them to work. Like all the other new Xperia series phones even the S model has a luminous strip.

In Xperia S, Sony once again returns with its “human curvature” across the battery cover. And this area is covered with a soft-touch plastic which gives the phone a quality feel to it that will make you feel that you are holding a sophisticated smartphone.
The interface has been changed slightly by Sony and now the new widgets look slightly different. The smartphone is available in two colour variants, white and black.

Processor and Operating System

The Sony Xperia S is powered by a fast 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon dual-core processor and is supported by a 1 GB RAM. A puzzling factor is that in spite of all its features this smartphone still functions on Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. But Sony has made provisions for the operating system to be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Features and Performance:

Screen: The Xperia S has a 4.3-inch capacitive touch screen. The huge screen size is very well complimented by the resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The screen is LED-backlit LCD. The phone also included in it , Sony’s Bravia Engine colour processing technology which will help in bringing out the best video outputs.

Camera: Well Sony with its Xperia S has gifted its users with a 12 mega pixel rear camera. The camera is equipped with Sony's Exmor-R image tech. This technology allows the camera to click decent pictures in low light and take excellent pictures under good lighting. A little flaw with the pictures is that though they look fine on the phone screen when transferred to the computer, the pictures seem grainy. It also comes equipped with features like Face Recognition and Smile Shutter.
An interesting feature that the Xperia S camera has is that when you click the camera button instead of opening the camera scene it immediately clicks a picture. This will be helpful to you in case you miss capturing the image as the camera takes some time to come into the click mode. At the beginning this option is disenabled, you have to manually enable it.

Storage and Connectivity: The smartphone does not have a slot for the microSD card, but there is no need to panic as the phone is equipped with a huge 32 GB internal memory space. But for those of you who find 32 GB memory space also less, there is an added 50 GB of cloud storage space available on the free Box app which is available on the Google Store.

Price and Availability: This smartphone is priced at Rs.33,000 making it a high end smartphone. But there isn’t anything to worry about as the various online sites will sell them at a lesser price. The phone is available on infibeam.com and flipkart.com for Rs.31,990.

Wrap-Up: The smartphone has exciting features packed in it and is available in the lower end bracket of the high-end phones. The phone is a good alternative Android Smartphone to the Apple’s iPhone 4S. Operating all the exciting features on the phone is made easier with Sony’s NXT user interface.

If this phone is a parameter to judge the upcoming smartphones from Sony then users are in for a real treat.
