at Taranaki (WITT) is a quality Government-owned tertiary education institution based in New Zealand's cultural and surfing hub.  Taranaki is a beautiful region defined by its wonderful snow-capped mountain, extensive coastline, great surfing and many opportunities for outdoor activities.The Western Institute of Technology is the only state tertiary institution in Taranaki and offers courses from certificate to degree level across a wide range of areas, including Business, Nursing, Hospitality, Maori, Humanities, Media, Art, Electrical, Engineering, Automotive, Welding, Carpentry, Architecture, Computing, Hairdressing, Fashion, Beauty Therapy, Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences and Agriculture. The Western Institute of Technology also specialises in English language tuition and foundation programmes for overseas students. The Western Institute of Technology's main campus is in New Plymouth, on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The campus contains a cafeteria, art blocks, computer labs, engineering workshops, hospitality facilities (including a training restaurant and cafe) and most recently, two student accommodation blocks offering modern and affordable living. The Western Institute of Technology focuses its courses particularly on vocational outcomes, and seeks to ensure that graduates are able to enter the workforce successfully or to advance their careers through further education or training. Our small size means that we are able to focus on the needs of our students and provide high-quality tuition in a small class environment. We also work very closely with industry to ensure that our students get real industry experiences and are able to learn from this on–job training. ACCOUNTING, BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT: Workers in management, business, and finance occupations plan and direct the activities of business, government, and other organisations. The business world has undergone dramatic changes in the past two decades and the global marketplace has truly arrived with business and commerce being carried out 24/7.With new businesses starting and existing organisations expanding in various industries, there is a demand for people with accounting, business and people skills.

Accounting

Accounting is the study of how businesses track their income and assets over time and plan for the future. There's a lot to get out of a career in accounting, especially learning how business works. The Western Institute of Technology’s Accounting Technicians’ Diploma will set you up to work in this stimulating and challenging field.

Business & Management

Among the fastest growing employment areas in New Zealand are business and management. This is one of the few careers where there is need if a company is doing well and likewise a need if it is not doing so well. Management incorporates operational and personnel management, business analysis and planning services to commercial, government and voluntary organisations. These services include the day-to-day running and managing of businesses, as well as the hiring and management of staff. Other areas of business include marketing and sales, finance, operations, e-commerce and business law.

Business Administration

People in the administrative services industry are responsible for the day-to-day running of businesses and organisations, and provide support to managers and other staff. Almost every business or organisation has a need for administrative staff. With experience and further qualifications Administrators can progress their careers into specialist areas (e.g. Legal Secretary), management (e.g. Office Manager) or Personal Assistant to higher manager roles.

COMPUTING & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
 

The Computing and Information Technology (IT) industry includes people working for companies that produce and service IT products, and people who work in IT-related occupations within other industries.Common areas of work within the computing and IT industry include Computer Engineering (development of systems that involve software, hardware, and communications), information systems (computing in an organisational context, typically in businesses) and information technology (focuses on computing infrastructure and the needs of individual users).
Qualifications: National Certificate in Computing Level 2 ,  Certificate in Computing & Information Technology Level 3 , Certificate in Computing and Information Technology Level 5 , Diploma in Information & Communications Technology (Level 5)   

ENGINEERING & RELATED TRADES

ENGINEERING is a major industry in Taranaki, employing a significant proportion of the Taranaki workforce. Projections out to 2026 indicate strong growth in the engineering industry. As engineering, manufacturing and construction companies expand they will require people with the right qualifications, particularly at trade and technician levels. So if you are looking for a career with a bright future, engineering could be the choice for you.

Architecture & Construction   
Architecture, Constructive Management and Quantity Surveying involves the preparation and development of plans and designs for the construction of buildings, building interiors and other structures as well as estimation, tendering and commercial construction processes.  WITT offers the first of three National Diploma's.

Automotive   
The automotive industry involves the servicing of motor vehicles, from motorcycles to bulldozers, and small machines such as lawnmowers. The Western Institute of Technology offers pre apprenticeship automotive training to help you get into your apprenticeship sooner.

Carpentry
A Carpenter is a skilled craftsperson who performs a wide range of woodworking that includes constructing buildings, furniture, and other objects out of wood. The Western Institute of Technology offers pre-apprenticeship carpentry training to help you get into your building apprenticeship sooner.

Civil Engineering   
Civil Engineering focuses on the design and construction of public and private works, such as bridges and roads.
Qualifications: Certificate in Civil Industry (Introductory Skills) , New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil) , Diploma in Engineering Technology (Highways)  , Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Highways) , Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Highways) , Certificate in Engineering Technology (Core/Highways/Civil/Water)

Truck Driving
The road transport industry provides transport of materials, livestock, machinery, liquids, general freight, and hazardous substances
Qualifications: Certificate in Road Transport (Core Skills)

Electrical
Electricians specialise in electrical wiring of buildings and related equipment. Electricians may be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure. The Western Institute of Technologyoffers pre-apprenticeship electrical training to help you get into your apprenticeship sooner.

Mechanical Engineering   
The Mechanical Engineering industry is made up of a range of occupations that involve the design, production and service of machinery, equipment, tools and mechanical systems. The Western Institute of Technologyoffers pre-trades training in Mechanical Engineering to help you get into your apprenticeship sooner and a Diploma for those looking to move into design and draughting.  
Qualifications: National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering  , Certificate in Design Draughting (Industrial or Construction) , National Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)  
 
Oil and Gas Process Operations
The oil and gas sector in Taranaki is significant from both a regional and national perspective. Projections are that its share of employment and GDP will double over the next 20 years. The Western Institute of Technology plans to offer a pre-employment Process Operator training programme to provide skilled new entrants to this industry.
Qualifications: Certificate in Process Operations (Oil and Gas)  

Welding   
Welding fabrication engineers make, join and repair metal parts for machinery and equipment such as motor bodies, trailer units, containers, truck frames and bridges.
Qualifications: Certificate of achievement in Welding , Certificate in Welding (Level 3)
